Morse Waterways Association News Letter 5/28/09

Water quality meeting was held on April 30. Dr. Lenore Tedesco gave spoke about the various types of algae including the blue green toxic algae which concerns those of us that use Morse and/or Geist reservoir. Dr. Tedesco and her staff from IUPUI Center for Earth and Environmental Science with funding from Veolia Water reviewed the Morse algae study results from last year. She and her team are conducting the same research this year to better understand the sources of algae. To view her Dr. tedesco’s presentation go to this web site and click on Morse 2008 Update. http://www.cees.iupui.edu/Research/Water_Resources/CIWRP/Algae_Information/index.htm

Ed Belmonte from V3 reviewed the planned study for water quality testing on the Cicero Creek watershed. His presentation can be found on our web site at this link. http://www.morseh2o.org/Quality/water_quality.htm

The audience participated in an exercise to determine their primary concerns regarding water quality. Here are the top ten concerns:

Silt inputs from Watershed into Morse Reservoir

Education and outreach of Watershed issues

Conflict between water quality and production agriculture

Public concern over blue-green algae

Safety of using Morse Reservoir recreationally

Stormwater after rain event
